And Fort Boyard, right at the back, get closer to your screen, it's there ;) A carrelet, also called ableret, square or chess, is a kind of square fishing net, mounted on two rings and hung from the end of a boom. It was considered until the nineteenth century as a tool for professional fishing, then today it is more an instrument of leisure. Simple tool in the past, the term plaice has come to mean over time a kind of more complex construction, where the net is mounted on a wooden bridge on stilts, connected to shore by a pier, which also supports a fisherman's hut. The 1999 storm destroyed 90% of the 700 squares of the department, which were gradually reconstructed, up two-thirds now. - Although not the main subject of the picture, an interesting article (french) on the history and the reasons for the construction of this fort.
